From Pakistan to Malaysia: A Software Developer’s Journey

Next up on our Meet #TeamTeleport series, we have Muhammad Mateen, the Developer for the Software Development team in Teleport. Read on to get to know a little more about him!

Tell us a bit about how you got here! How did you start your journey with Teleport, and how has it taken you to where you are now?

I’ve been working at Teleport since 2019. Prior to this, I felt a bit unlucky as I always faced a ‘bossy’ kind of environment in the companies I worked at, whether back home in Pakistan, or here in Malaysia. I was always expected to do what I was told to do; in that kind of culture, I found that learning and growing became very difficult. I couldn’t explore my role and responsibilities; I only needed to work continuously like a machine. I got tired of that sort of environment, and I sought to find a better working environment where I could grow. I tried my luck by applying with AirAsia, and subsequently joined Teleport.

The day I joined, I felt a little out of my comfort zone as I had zero knowledge about e-commerce and logistics. But Teleport has really helped me think out of the box and to set my aims high, so I learned to communicate openly with everyone.

How would you describe your experience at Teleport so far? What do you love most about your job? Any memorable moments you’d like to share?

I am very thankful to be working here at Teleport. As I am part of an energetic team, I feel that there is plenty of room to improve myself, to collaborate and learn new skill sets. I particularly love the culture, as there is no one pressuring me in my work. I can also wear anything I like to feel comfortable, as there is no strict dress code.

One of the most memorable moments so far is when we had our town hall meeting in Langkawi. During the trip, there were three yachts divided among the teams accordingly. It was very fun as everyone let loose on the yachts, and I had my first-ever experience in a club that same night.

Of Teleport’s six core values, Mateen relates to “Choose Speed, Not Siput!” the most

Which of the Teleport core values do you think you relate to the most?

Out of the six core values of Teleport, I can say that I relate mostly to “Choose Speed, Not Siput!” especially regarding office work. I like to make it a habit to finish my work before the deadline. However, sometimes, when there is no design, I make do with it by designing and implementing functionalities for mobile apps, as we must stick to the deadlines.

Tell us some fun facts about yourself that others may not know about!

Fun fact? For some strange reason, almost everyone thinks I have a girlfriend! In fact, some people even think I have more than one. But I am in fact single!

What would you say keeps you motivated at work?

Learning new things and meeting deadlines is what motivates me to do a good job. However, this does not mean that I overlook the quality of the work. Even since my first job, I’ve always made it a point to complete most assignments before the stipulated time, with utmost precision. Completing work before time gives me a sense of pride and achievement.

What do you suppose your future would be like? What do you hope to see change, whether in the company as a whole or just in your own personal growth?

In terms of the company, I hope to see it expand and open an office in Pakistan. There are plenty of opportunities there with delivery business, for example fabric, wheat, leather and Himalyan salt. The company can really help with importing these at a cheaper price. With such an expansion, I also hope to be able to support it with my own knowledge of the Pakistan market and business trends.
